There are changes afoot in the Marvel Universe, with the news that Thor, one of its most popular characters, is becoming female.
The surprise announcement was made on US daytime show The View earlier today, following reports that a new character was about to enter the comic giants’ universe.
However hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Jenny McCarthy later revealed that it wasn’t so much a newcomer as a woman who takes on the Thor mantle after the original thunder god is deemed unworthy of the hammer of Thor – aka the Mjolnir.
‘The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more,’ Marvel editor Will Moss later said.
‘And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!’
McCarthy, meanwhile, announced that the new Thor incarnation was a woman who had followed Thor to Earth after he previously saved her life.
Daring: Marvel have revealed that Thor will be a woman in the next series of comics
Makeover: Marvel hopes to attract a new audience with Thor as a strong female character
The female Thor will appear in her first Marvel comic in October, although her involvement in the Marvel movies has not yet been confirmed.
However it won’t be the first time that a woman has entered Thor’s Universe, with another character, Thor Girl – aka Tarene – first appearing in the comics in 2000.
The original Thor debuted in 1962, as a character who was banished to earth by his father Odin to learn humility.
He lived there in his human guise of Dr Donald Blake, until his powers returned after an encounter with Mjolnir.
