Chantelle Driver, 22, and Shomari Holmes, 21, both of Marietta.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - Authorities say the 21-month-old child who was physically abused by his parents has died at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

As a result of the child's death on Thursday, charges have been upgraded against the child's father, Shomari Holmes. Marietta police say he is now facing a felony murder charge.

Police arrested Holmes and the child’s mother, Chantelle Driver on Monday after the child was found clinging to life in their apartment.

According to an arrest warrant, Shomari Holmes, 21, of Marietta, is facing aggravated battery, simple battery and second-degree cruelty to children charges after hitting the toddler with closed fists in the head and ribs repeatedly, causing internal bleeding. Police say Holmes admitted to the alleged crimes in a video confession.
