Portion of I-85 collapses due to massive fire

ATLANTA - Part of Interstate 85 near Piedmont Road has collapsed after a massive fire burned under the roadway overpass Thursday evening.

Atlanta Police said the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring under the I-85 overpass near the Lindbergh MARTA station. After burning for 45 minutes, part of the roadway collapsed.

There were no signs of any injuries, Atlanta Fire Dept. Sgt. Cortez Stafford said.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal urged drivers to avoid the area if at all possible.

Atlanta Fire appeared to have gotten the fire under control by 8 p.m. Drivers were being re-routed down the highway to nearby exits.
