Joseph “Joe” Bennett

ATLANTA – A veteran skydiving instructor from Skydive Monroe was killed Saturday.

Skydive Monroe’s owner Bill Scott said that Joseph “Joe” Bennett, 49, died from injuries during a “hard landing.” The incident started as a normal skydive but when Bennett came into to land and open his parachute, there was no time for it to flatten, Scott said.

“He’ll be sadly missed in the community. He was a good guy all around who loved Nascar and skydiving,” Scott said.

Medical personnel at Skydive Monroe was on hand to help until Bennett was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital where officials said he ultimately died of his injuries.

Scott said Bennett had completed over 6,800 jumps under his belt.
