3 dead, 6 hurt in horrific 4-car crash on Ga. Highway 365
GAINESVILLE, Ga. -
Three people are dead and six people hurt after a horrific crash on Georgia Highway 365 at Howard Road in Gainesville, authorities said.
At one point, two vehicles are pinned beneath a tractor trailer.
The crash happened at 1 a.m. Friday and involved four vehicles: a tractor-trailer, Ford Escape, pick-up truck and Jeep, FOX 5 Atlanta's Marc Teichner reports.
Two of the fatalities were in the pick-up truck -- which became pinned under the rig during the collision. The third fatality was in the Ford Escape.
A family of four rode in the Jeep. They have been transported to a hospital to be treated for their injuries.
Of the six people injured, two are reported to be children. The extent of these injuries has yet to be confirmed by authorities.
"We do plan on being out here for a number of hours as the tractor trailer is currently overturned and there is a vehicle tangled in with that tractor-trailer," said Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook. "The tractor-trailer has leaked an abundance of fuel as well as oil. And the fire department is currently on scene handling that hazardous situation."
Northbound lanes of Highway 365 near the accident site remain closed to traffic. There's been no word on when they will re-open. Drivers are urged to use an alternate route.
What caused the accident and if any charges would be filed has not been confirmed.
The tractor-trailer is a refrigerated truck from a local poultry facility.
