Missing man found dead in Buford creek
A Gwinnett County family is devastated after finding their loved one in a creek.
The family tells FOX 5 News that Stanley "Scotty" Maddox had been missing for a month. They believe he was murdered.
Police say they have yet to make a positive identification. Family members who found the body say it is Scotty, the one they were looking for during the last month.
"He made some bad choices. He was not a bad person. He did not deserve this," said his former girlfriend, Julie Puckett.
Kayte Wilford is beside herself. She and other family members found her father floating face down in a creek on Sudderth Road in Buford on Saturday morning. They suspect foul play,
Family and friends say Scotty had been missing since last month following a police chase that ended near the area where they found him. They knew something wasn't right.
They say they usually hear from him, but a week went by and nothing. For the last few weeks they say they tried to file a missing person report.
"We tried to file a missing person's report and they wouldn't let us. They denied us every day because they said that he had active warrants from the night he went missing," said daughter Holli Wilford.
Officer Jeffery Richter tells FOX 5 News that if there were outstanding warrants, the sheriff's office would be looking for him.
Family members say they decided to form a search party and look for him. Ten minutes in, they found him in the creek.
For hours police investigated gathering evidence as family and friends waited on word as to what happened to Scotty.
Because the body was found in a creek, police officers say they will need swift water rescue to retrieve the body before it is sent to the crime lab for an autopsy.
