AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Police say they have arrested a former Doctors Hospital employee accused of stealing controlled substance
The Doctors Hospital administrators contacted the police after a nurse viewed video footage from an automated medication dispenser. In the video, Erin Pak Kang, 26, can be seen withdawing at least two vials of morphine during her shift on March 4. Data retrieved from the dispenser also confirmed it was Kang making the withdrawal. Surveillance video also showed Kang entering the bathroom each time she withdrew morphine from the medication dispenser.
When Kang was confronted by hospital administrators, she denied using the morphine. When they asked her to show her arms, officials say they saw bruising and small needle pricks consistent with IV drug usage. She did not admit to the theft, but she did tell hospital officials that she needed to seek help for substance abuse.
Kang was terminated and immediately went to a drug treatment center.
A spokesperson for Doctor's Hospital released a statement Monday afternoon saying:
“We suspected an individual was improperly removing medication for personal use. We notified the Sheriff’s Office and terminated the individual. There is no indication that this theft affected medication administered to patients. We have pressed charges against this individual and we continue to assist the Sheriff’s Office.”
