(RNN) - The story of Zach Sobiech, an 18-year-old who succumbed to a rare form of bone cancer on Monday, is touching hearts and changing the way people look at their time on Earth.

At the young age of 14, Zach was diagnosed with the life-altering disease osteosarcoma.

"He came back from the run and told me 'Mom, my left hip hurts.' We went in for an MRI, at this point, cancer was not on my radar at all," his mom, Laura Sobiech said in a 22-minute documentary, My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech.

Zach continued to live his life as a normal teenager until May of 2012, when he was told the cancer had spread and he likely only had months to a year to live.

"I thought I was invincible. I was ready for college, I was planning out way ahead, it turns out, sometimes you can't do that," Zach said.

However, instead of letting the weight of his illness consume him, he decided to use his last days to embrace life and live each day with hope and joy.

"That's what's awesome about living in this world ... you can help people," Zach said.

And that's exactly what he did. Zach turned to music to offer hope to the loved ones he left behind and anyone else who might be touched by his story. He made it his mission to spread the joy of living to anyone he came in contact with.

He first made headlines with his original song Clouds. He wrote the song to give his family a way to remember him and to remind them that they will be together again one day.

When word got out about Clouds, director Justin Baldoni with SoulPancake wanted to create a music video. However, when the music video didn't pan out, Baldoni gave him a much bigger gift - a video of 30 different celebrities singing the song, including Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat, Sara Bareilles, Andy Grammer, Jenna Fischer and Paul McDonald.

Baldoni went on to direct and produce My Last Days: Meet Zach Sobiech. In the touching and heart-wrenching video, you're introduced to the young man who never lost his smile, as well as the family, girlfriend and friends who never left his side.

Zach passed away on Monday, May 20, and his funeral was held on Thursday. His story, however, is just beginning to make its mark. His documentary has more than six million views on YouTube and Clouds is currently No. 1 on iTunes.
