The Jasper County School District has filed a lawsuit because of the design and construction of specific elements of the Ridgeland and Hardeeville school sites under construction.
Several sinkholes have formed at both sites, and after investigations, defects in the construction of the underground storm water system have been identified.
The defects promote the formation of sinkholes, but also cause the storm water system to do a poor job of storm water drainage from the buildings, paved areas and fields.
Both construction sites are also experiencing water intrusion at windows and stairwells where sections of the school buildings connect.
The original contractors attempted to repair the areas, but the areas were designed with materials different from the precast concrete panels, which could increase the risk of additional maintenance and repair costs for the school district.
The district has engaged in talks with responsible parties in an effort to correct these conditions, but the district has determined that filing a formal lawsuit at this time is necessary to protect the district's rights.
The district's retained experts have estimated the cost to repair the current conditions to be over $1 million.
Named in the lawsuit are the architect, construction manager and contractors: Liollio Architecture, Martin Engineering, Gulfstream Construction, Celek & Celek Construction, Harrell's Grading and Cumming Construction Management (formerly Southern Management Group).
The complaint has been filed in Jasper County Court of Common Pleas by the District attorneys and will be served promptly on all other parties.
