Lionel Messi and father condemned to 21 months in prison on tax charges

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been jailed for 21 months – along with his father Jorge – over three tax frauds.

Prosecutors said that Messi and his father defrauded Spanish tax authorities of $4.5 million over the period 2007-2009.

The court has also sentenced the Argentine soccer player’s father, Jorge, to 21 months in prison for the same three crimes.

The sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court.

However, it is highly unlikely that Messi and his father will be going to jail for the crime as, under Spanish law a prison sentence under two years can be served under probation.

The court ordered Messi to pay a fine of around $2.5 million and his father to pay $1.5 million for the crimes.
