Hackers taking smart TVs hostage

Security experts have recently given warnings about an increasing amount of cyber-attacks on televisions which lock out the viewer until they pay a ransom.

Hackers are increasingly carrying out attacks on smart TVs from abroad, locking users out of their devices and making them unable to watch until they pony up a large ransom.

The attacks, known as “ransomware”, cause the lockdowns to appear as if it was ordered by a government agency, such as the police. They often claim illegal connections have been made with your TV and that the block won’t be lifted until the victim pays a ransom to the criminals.

Ransomware is one of the fastest growing cybercrime trends as cyber-criminals target more people than ever before.
