The comic book where Superman made his first appearance has been put up for sale on eBay and has already attracted bids in excess of $1million.

Action Comics #1 is arguably the most sought-after publication in the world and was credited with starting the superhero genre when it was released in 1938.

‘For sale here is the single most valuable comic book to ever be offered for sale, and is likely to be the only time ever offered for sale during many of our lifetimes,’ wrote Darren Adams, from the team selling the item.

He added the comic was ‘the nicest to ever be graded’ by the Certified Guaranty Company after receiving a 9.0 score, which means it is Very Fine/Near Mint.

A previous copy owned by Nicholas Cage, which was also a 9.0, sold for $2.1m. The sellers of the latest one expect an increase on the current highest bid of $1.75m.

There are thought to be between 50 and 100 copies of the first issue left.
