Yes everybody, you can see The Interview after all, as it’s been released online (Picture: AP/Columbia TriStar)

If you thought you might never have the chance to see controversial comedy The Interview for yourselves then think again – as the film has been released online by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The studio, who originally pulled the film from its planned Christmas Day cinema release last week, gave viewers an unexpected Christmas present when it was unleashed online at 1pm Eastern Time (around 6pm here).

So, if you want to see for yourselves what all the fuss is about you can now do so at the website seetheinterview.com – while Google Play, XBox and YouTube are also featuring the movie.

The move to release the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy online comes following yesterday’s news that the film would be released in selected US cinemas on Thursday as planned.

‘It has always been Sony’s intention to have a national platform on which to release this film,’ the company’s chairman and CEO Michael Lynton said in a statement.

For those who would rather see it at the cinema on Christmas Day, The Interview will also be released at 200 cinemas – with the Alamo Drafthouse chain and the Plaza Atlanta in Georgia among the first to announce they would be screening the film.

The move was welcomed by President Barack Obama, whose spokesman Eric Schultz said he ‘applauds’ the decision to release the comedy after all.

‘As the president made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic expression,’ he said.

‘The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome.’

The Interview tells the story of two television journalists recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

It was pulled from release after hackers – who carried out the recent cyber attack on Sony – warned people to stay away from cinemas showing the film.
