ZOE Saldana has come under fire for wearing "blackface" and a prosthetic nose in a new biopic of Nina Simone.

The 37-year-old actress plays the iconic singer in upcoming movie Nina, which has been in production for several years.

Now, the trailer has emerged – and people are not happy.

Zoe, whose parents are from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, had her skin darkened with make-up, as well as wearing a prosthetic nose, to play the black soul singer and civil rights activist.

After seeing the poster and viewing the trailer, which also stars David Oyelowo as Nina's assistant turned manager Clifton Henderson, fans of Miss Simone likened the casting of Saldana to blackface.

CONTROVERSIAL: Zoe, who is of Latina and Hispanic descent, was chosen to play the soul singer

One person tweeted: "Zoe Saldana playing Nina is the closest to whitewashing without a white person", while another added: "So many talented dark-skinned actresses out there. No excuse for spray on melanin on Zoe Saldana."

The decision to cast Avatar actress Saldana as Sinnerman singer Nina has been causing controversy for years, with even Nina's daughter coming out against the casting,

Simone told the New York Times in 2012: "My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise this is not the best choice."

She added to Ebony magazine: "I love Zoe Saldana’s work. I’ve seen some of her movies more than once and really enjoy what she brings to the screen. As an actress I respect her process, but I also know that there are many actresses out there, known or not, who would be great as my mother."

Another picture that emerged from filming clearly shows the make-up used on Zoe to darken her skin.

Racism in Hollywood has been at the forefront of debate recently thanks to #OscarsSoWhite, after a complete whitewashing of acting nominations at the Academy Awards.
