GAME of Thrones is notorious for killing off favorite characters in grisly gory which often leads to millions of fans left heartbroken.

Last night's episode saw another fan favorite die, leaving viewers emotional about the loss of the innocent-minded character Hodor.

It all started after Bran Stark came face-to-face with the Night King in a vision, and needed protection from the White Walkers in the present day.

GENTLE GIANT: Hodor carried Bran after he lost the use of his legs

In the past, the Stark son took control of a younger Hodor – who at the time could utter more than just his name – also known as Wylis.

The young Hodor somehow heard Meera, who was in the present, shouting "hold the door" which he starts repeating.

“Hold the door. Hold the door. Hold door. Hold door. Hodor.” which became the only thing he could say for the rest of his life and also became his name.

MOURNING: Fans were left heartbroken over Hodor's death

The gentle giant was overcome by the White Walkers, leading to an outcry from viewers and fans.

One wrote: "If you excuse me I'm just going to cry for the next week."

Another emotional fan said: "I give 'ugly crying' a whole new meaning."

While a third mourned the protector: "Game of Thrones has me feeling all kinds of messed up… We'll always love you Hodor."

But that wasn't the only loss in the episode, as Bran's direwolf Summer also became victim to the White Walkers.

A viewer tweeted: "I don't know if I feel worse for the Stark kids or the Stark wolves."
