Richmond County Sheriff's deputies say they arrested an Augusta woman after a teacher at Gracewood Elementary School noticed bruises on one of her students.

According the incident report, Shawnika Lavon Davis, 26, is charged with cruelty to children in the 1st degree. Davis is accused of hitting a child with a belt and extension cord, leaving bruises.

The report also stated that a teacher at the school reported that one of her students had bruises on their face and complained about their arm. The teacher said the student's elbow was swollen. The student told the teacher a principal, Davis hit them with a belt and extension cord.

School officials called the sheriff's office and the Department of Family Services. Deputies say they also saw bruises on the child's face and arms and had EMS take the child to Augusta University Medical Center.
