SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - Last week, the Farmington Hills Police Department was searching for 63-year-old Gillian Everett. She was last seen on June 12 with her caregiver, 36-year-old Jewel Sanders, a woman we now know has a criminal history.

Last year in Oak Park, she misrepresented herself as a nurse who ran an adult foster care facility out of a home. A private agency recommended her to Linda White.

"She can convince most families that she's going to do what you expect, give your loved ones quality care," said White.

Her father, 80-year-old Jimmie Lee Pitts, had lived at the home for only four days when White took him to the hospital. He had a broken femur.

Sanders never told White her father had fallen the first day there. He died a month later.

"Although they couldn't prove that her actions or (inaction) were the cause of my father's death, I strongly believe that they were because he walked into her home and he was carried out like a baby," White told FOX 2's Amy Lange.

Oak Park Police discovered Sanders wasn't a nurse and her facility wasn't licensed with the state. She was convicted and now could face more charges after allegedly absconding from probation with Everett, who she did return to police unharmed last week.

Sanders' attorney did not return calls seeking comment.

"If she gets away with it this time, she'll do it again," White said.

"It can be a very dangerous situation," said Sallie Justice with the Area Agency on Aging 1-B.

She told us a million Michigan families are caring for aging or ailing loved ones, so it's important to do your research when hiring a caregiver.

"Do background checks, criminal background checks, and also check references and ... ask a lot of really valuable questions," Justice said.
