Senate votes on four gun control amendments, all fail

The U.S. has voted on four new gun control amendments on Monday, and to no one’s surprise, all four failed. Two of the four measures almost had the necessary votes to pass, both receiving a 53-47 vote.

Senate Democrats blamed the National Rifle Association and its powerful hold over numerous politicians for the failure. Sen. Harry Reid said “Republicans are just about as phony as anyone can be. All they care about is taking care of the NRA. You get somebody that’s in a difficult situation, like the senator from New Hampshire, the junior senator from New Hampshire, she’s doing everything but yoga on the Senate floor to justify what she’s doing,”

One of the new amendments would have closed a loophole that allows anyone to buy a gun online or at a gun show without being subjected to a background check first. A CBS News poll, conducted after the Orlando mass shooting incident, found that 89% of people supported background checks on all gun buyers.

The Democrats, however, have pledged to continue the fight. Sen. Chris Murphy wrote on Twitter, “Dear gun lobby – I’m not going anywhere. I’m not backing down. And I got millions of folks with me. #Enough”
