Dak Prescott has Mississippi State in the Top 4

The only way the SEC has any games of note on Saturday is if a few teams succumb to an upset

The SEC has plenty of easy games on the college football schedule this weekend. It’s the time of year where the strongest conference in the country plays a bunch of a FCS schools.  How bad is the schedule on Saturday? The only non-conference game that even has a betting line is between South Carolina and Alabama.

The three games pitting SEC teams against each other might not fare much better.  None of the lower ranked teams have a winning record this season. The Arkansas Razorbacks are attempting to get back to respectability. After defeating LSU last weekend, the Razorbacks have another home game with the No.8 Ole Miss Rebels. Arkansas needs one win to become eligible for a bowl game, while Ole Miss is still in contention for the SEC West crown.

As for the Tennessee Volunteers, they also need a win to become bowl eligible. The Vols are the home team, and are actually a slight favorite over the Missouri Tigers. If Tennessee can defeat Missouri, the Georgia Bulldogs will be representing the SEC East in the SEC championship game.  Otherwise, Missouri will need one more win for their second straight shot at the conference title.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are the lone home team with a lot on the line.  After losing to Alabama, these Bulldogs fell to No.4 in the College Football Playoff rankings. With a dearth of one loss teams at the top, Mississippi State might be able to win their remaining two games, and skate into the playoffs. However, Mississippi State can still win the SEC West with an Alabama loss.  Therefore, they would have to win three more games to make the final four.

Barring any major upsets, the SEC will remain status quo. It will be interesting to see if any close games will alter the selection committee’s thoughts next Tuesday.  That alone would be enough to change the SEC’s scheduling habits.
