The SEC takes a step back in the College Football Playoff rankings

Only Alabama has a shot at the College Football playoff postseason

As it currently stands, only one SEC has an opportunity to make the College Football Playoff. The Alabama Crimson Tide remained the No.1 team in the country, but the next closest team is No.10 Mississippi State. After months of speculating whether there would be multiple teams from the SEC in the postseason playoffs, there’s still a chance that the whole conference is erased from the postseason entirely.

The No.16 Missouri Tigers earned their second consecutive SEC East crown and they’ll take on Alabama in the conference championship. There doesn’t seem to be a likely scenario where Missouri could win that game and jump all the way up to the top four.  However, the selection committee may pull heavy weight from conference champions and have the Tigers replace the Crimson Tide. Still, a lot has to happen before that scenario comes through fruition.

Ole Miss is the highest ranked three loss team in the country. The Rebels jumped up seven spots to No.12 after their win over Mississippi State. It’s good for Ole Miss, but it’s bad for the conference overall. If Missouri was ranked where one of the Mississippi schools were, then there could be more conversation of a top four spot.

Even the No.14 Georgia Bulldogs stayed ahead of  Missouri. Although Georgia dominated Missouri in a head to head match-up, the committee showed that they don’t care about wins very much. If they did, Baylor might be ahead of TCU.

No.19 Auburn and No.24 LSU round out the seven SEC teams in the College Football Playoff rankings. With only championship weekend left, the SEC should keep the same amount of teams in.
