SECURE: WhatsApp has announced all messages are now end-to-end encrypted

WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app and it's now the most secure.

The Facebook owned firm has just announced that, from today, all messages sent via the service will be end-to-end encrypted.

This means when you send a message, the only person who can read it is the person or group chat that you send that message to.

"No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not oppressive regimes. Not even us." reads a statement on the company's blog.

Although WhatsApp has always been secure the firm says that it has now completed a technological development that makes the app a leader in protecting your private communication.

From now on when you and your contacts use the latest version of the app, every call you make, and every message, photo, video, file, and voice message you send, is end-to-end encrypted by default, including group chats.

WhatsApp states: "The desire to protect people's private communication is one of the core beliefs we have at WhatsApp.

"Today more than a billion people are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with their friends and family all over the world.

"And now, every single one of those people can talk freely and securely on WhatsApp."

Although the end-to-end encryption is good news for WhatsApp fans it's unlikely to be popular with many governments.
