One Tweet earned Microsoft’s creator $2.5 billion (Picture Microsoft)

Checks for more than a billion pounds are few and far between – but Minecraft’s Swedish creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson cashed one in return for just one tweet.

Microsoft bought Minecraft from Notch for $2.5bn, sensing an opportunity after Notch tweeted that he wasn’t too happy at the helm.

Notch created and wrote the insanely popular Lego-esque world-building game by himself – so his tweet, where he highlighted his dismay at having to manage his creation, sparked a bidding war.

Almost as soon as Notch had tweeted it, the CEO of Mojang, his company, received a call from Microsoft asking if he was serious.

He was – and after turning down rival bids from Electronic Arts, Persson cashed one of the biggest payouts in entertainment history.
