A young mother has been charged with suffocating her two infant children inside a home in Maryland. Police say the woman has confessed to the killings.

Investigators say the children, 1-year-old Ayden Spoon and 3-year-old Kayla Thompson, were found barely breathing inside their grandparents' house on Forest Road early Sunday morning.

The children's mother, 24-year-old Sonya Spoon, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

"She was Mirandized and subsequently waived her rights to Miranda and provided a very detailed statement implicating her involvement in the death of her children," said Prince George's County Police Maj. Cesar Pacheco.

Prince George's County Police say they are not sure what drove Spoon to allegedly kill her two infant children. But Cheverly police say they were called to the house a week ago. The mother of the accused was concerned that Spoon was depressed.

"She advised our officers that her daughter had suicidal thoughts and also stated that she wanted to take the life of her daughter,” said Sgt. Jarod Towers of the Cheverly Police Department.

Police say Spoon was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center for an emergency psychiatric evaluation. What happened after that is still unclear.

The head of criminal investigations for Prince George's County police says evidence from the murders was found inside the home Sunday morning.

"Without getting into too many particulars, there were bags that were placed over the children's heads,” said. Maj. Pacheco.

And tied with duct tape, according to court documents. The documents also say Spoon woke up her mother at around 2:15 a.m. Sunday and told her she had just killed her two children. The grandmother went downstairs, pulled the bags and the duct tape from the children, tried performing CPR on both of them, called paramedics and were rushed to the hospital where they both were pronounced dead.

Police say the two children had different fathers.

In her social media bio, Spoon says she was born in Russia and adopted at age three. She has an associate's degree in early childhood education. And in a dated photo that was posted, she had a little girl who was “her world.”

"Based on what we know at this point, we do believe that she appreciated what she was doing and made a conscious decision to kill these two children," said Prince George's County State's Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.
